Design Principles for Noncentrosymmetric Materials

Noncentrosymmetric (NCS) materials feature an exciting array of functionalities such as nonlinear optical (NLO) responses and topological spin textures (skyrmions). While NLO magnetic skyrmions display two different sets physical properties, their design strategies are deeply connected in terms atomic-scale precision, structural customization, electronic tunability. Despite impressive progress studying these systems separately, a joint road map for navigating the chemical principles NCS remains elusive. This review unites subtopics systems, skyrmions, offering multifaceted narrative how to translate often-abstract fundamentals targeted while inviting innovative approaches from community. We outline central desired properties by exemplifying relevant examples field. supplement chemistry with pertinent structures demonstrate power create integration foreseeable societal impacts frequency-doubling instrumentation spin-based electronics.
